Arthur Conan Doyle completed the first edition of this work in September 1900, at a time when the British believed the war was over. It continued, however, until 1902 and so Doyle continuously revised and republished the account in 16 revisions with multiple impressions. In this, the final edition, Doyle stated in his preface: "During the course of the war some sixteen editions of this work have appeared, each of which was, I hope, a little more full and accurate than that which preceded it...In this final edition the early text has been carefully revised and all fresh available knowledge has been added within the limits of a singular volume narrative."
