Eudora Welty won the 1973 Pulitzer Prize and was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was also the first living author to have her works published by the Library of America. Her fourth collection of short stories, The Golden Apples is the chronicle of a town she calls Morgana, Mississippi as told through a series of viewpoints which operate as a unified whole. Lettie Ransley noted in her review of the book, "Allusion and metaphor hang as thick as Spanish moss in Welty's prose."
