English Egyptologist, Orientalist, and philologist Sir Ernest Alfred Thompson Wallis Budge published numerous works on the ancient Near East and acquired an extensive collection of Egyptian and Sudanese cuneiform tablets, manuscripts, and papyri for the British Museum. Budge was instrumental in bringing Egyptology to larger audiences and, in 1920, he was knighted for his service to Egyptology and the British Museum.
