POTOK, Chaim.

Item Number: 96022

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1990.

First edition of Potok’s deeply insightful novel. Octavo, original cloth. Signed and dated by the author on the title page, “Chaim Potok 9 April ’91.” Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Paul Bacon. Jacket photograph by Jerry Bauer.

Published in 1990 as a sequel to Potok's 1972 novel My Name is Asher Lev, the Gift of Asher Lev continues the story of the brilliant eponymous Hasidic painter who learns of his late uncle's valuable art collection. The novel reflects the then-current debate within the Lubavitcher movement of Hasidim regarding the anticipated death and succession of their rebbe, Menachem M. Schneerson. Potok planned to write a third book about Asher Lev, but it was never completed.
