"Josephus ranks among the leading writers in world literature. His style is epic, his portrayals impressive, his gift of description captivates the reader alike by its fidelity and colorful presentation” (Encyclopedia Judaica). His historical works - The Jewish War, Antiquities of the Jews, Against Apion and his autobiography or Apologia—are “among the most valuable sources for the study of early Judaism and early Christianity” (Columbia University Press). Perhaps the most important of his works is Antiquities of the Jews, “and, indeed, it is one of the greatest of all antiquity… It was Josephus’ purpose to glorify the Jewish people, so often misunderstood, in the eyes of the Greco-Roman world” (Jewish Encyclopedia).
