First-century Romano-Jewish historian Titus Flavius Josephus works provide valuable insight into first century Judaism and the background of Early Christianity and remain the chief source, next to the Holy Bible, for the history and antiquity of ancient Palestine, providing a significant and independent extra-Biblical account of such figures as Pontius Pilate, Herod the Great, John the Baptist, and Jesus of Nazareth. His works also provide crucial information about the First Jewish-Roman War and represent important literary source material for understanding the context of the Dead Sea Scrolls and late Temple Judaism.
