The First Crossing of Greenland.
NANSEN, Fridtjof.
Item Number: 77030
London: Longmans, Green and Co, 1890.
First English edition of Nansen’s expedition across the Greenland icecap, from the library of John Levinson, former president of the Explorer’s Club, with his bookplates. Octavo, 2 volumes, 12 plates 5 folding maps, in text illustrations. In near fine condition. George T. Cushing (signature). An exceptional example with noted provenance.
Nansen designed much of his equipment from scratch in order to travel as light as possible, forming a party of only six people, including, on the advice of Nordenskiöld, two Sami men. Despite public ridicule over his plans, the expedition was a great success. Arctic Bib. 11985.
