First edition of Hutchinson’s classic work on the classification of flowering plants. Octavo, two volumes, original cloth, with illustrations by W.E. Trevithick and the author. In very good condition. Small ownership name to each volume.

Hutchinson's Families of Flowering Plants offers a novel classification of the dicots, departing from Bentham & Hooker in many details while generally conforming to their family circumscriptions. Hutchinson separated families into those which were predominantly woody from those which were herbaceous, and although this proposition has not stood the test of time it has posed some interesting questions for students of angiosperm phylogeny.
