The Faerie Queene was a new departure in the history of English poetry, being a combination of Italian romance, classical epic, and native English styles. Louis du Guernier, 1687 - 1716, was a French engraver. Du Guernier was soon recognized as a good designer, etcher and engraver, especially [of] small historical subjects for books or plays, of which he did a great many (Vertue, Note Books, 131).
