First issued in 1909, The Equinox served as the official organ of the A∴A∴, the magical order founded by Aleister Crowley in 1907, until the final issue was published in 1998. Often held to stand for Argenteum Astrum, which is Latin for Silver Star, the A∴A∴ was founded as an organization dedicated to the advancement of humanity by perfection of the individual on every plane through a graded series of universal syncretic initiations, unifying the essence of Theravada Buddhism with Vedantic yoga and ceremonial magic. With aims to research, practice, and teach "scientific illuminism", the organization applies what it describes as mystical and magical methods of spiritual attainment under the structure of the Qabalistic Tree of Life. Primarily featuring articles about occultism and magick, The Equinox, or The Review of Scientific Illuminism, also contained poetry, fiction, plays, artwork, and biographies including the first appearance of Crowley's The Wizard Way and The Soldier and the Hunchback: ! And ?, and Aha !, which he considered his "greatest magical poem".
