English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist Rudyard Kipling was one of the most popular writers in the British Empire, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1907. Kipling's The Drums of the Fore and Aft concerns an inexperienced Regular battalion on overseas service brigaded with a Highland Regiment and a Gurkha Regiment in Afghanistan. Unlike Kipling's other tales, it concerns the disgrace of a battle almost lost rather than the glory of a battle won.
