Set in London during the interwar period, Elizabeth Bowen's The Death of the Heart tells the story of Portia Quayne, a sixteen-year-old orphan who moves to London to live with her half-brother Thomas and falls in love with Eddie, a friend of her sister-in-law. The novel has been named as one of the 100 best modern novels, both by Time and the Modern Library and was adapted into a 1986 TV serial, starring Patricia Hodge and Miranda Richardson.
