Item Number: 140080

New York: Francis D. Tandy Company, 1905.

The Biographical edition of the works of Abraham Lincoln, being the second printing from the plates of the celebrated Gettysburg edition. Octavo, 12 volumes, bound in full morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, pictorial black morocco gilt inlays to front boards, patterned endpapers, top edge gilt, photogravure frontispieces with lettered tissue guards, numerous captioned plates throughout. In near fine condition. Edited by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.

Nicolay, Lincoln’s private secretary, "enjoyed the full intimate friendship of the President few men were as close to Lincoln as Nicolay or so fully enjoyed his confidence" (DAB VII: 511). After serving as Lincoln’s assistant and confidant, Hay achieved literary fame as the co-author of the definitive biography of Lincoln, and for his skill in helping edit Lincoln’s Complete Works (first published beginning in 1894). Lincoln Memorial University, founded in 1897, produced this edition not only to fund its endowment but also "to open a fountain of Lincolniana to which all true Americans will repair to refresh their faith in, and love and zeal for, American ideals and institutions."
