First edition. Octavo, original illustrated boards, pictorial endpapers. Inscribed by Dr. Seuss opposite the title page. Very good in a very good dust jacket with some light rubbing.

The year after Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, broke new ground in children’s books with The Cat in the Hat, he brought back the immediately popular character—with 26 little cats under his red-and-white stovepipe, not to mention the mysterious “Voom”—for a new madcap adventure. The title was the second from Beginner Books, Geisel’s own imprint at Random House; in very little time, as that line’s identifying logo, “the Cat’s image would become synonymous with learning to read” (Cohen, 324).
