Danny Lyon's photography has won him the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship for photography in 1969 and in film making in 1979. He has had solo exhibits at, but not limited to, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Menil Collection, and the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco. The Bikeriders is Lyon's first attempt at creating his own books, a study of outlaw motorcyclists that led to him joining and riding with the Chicago Outlaws motorcycle club.
