Betrayal premiered in 1978 at the Lyttelton Theatre & Royal National Theatre, London and was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play the following year. In 1980, it premiered in America on Broadway's Trafalgar Theatre, and in 2000 a Broadway revival was staged starring Liev Schreiber. Pinter adapted Betrayal into film in 1983, directed by David Jones and starring Ben Kingsley. It was critically well-received and praised notably by New York Times film critic Vincent Canby and by Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert.
