Collected over many centuries by various authors, translators and scholars, the Middle Eastern folk tales included in One Thousand and One Nights trace their roots back to Arabic, Jewish, Greek, Indian and Turkish folklore and literature. Some of the stories most widely associated with the compilation including Aladdin's Wonderful Lamp, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, and The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor were added later by Antoine Gilland who produced the first French translation in 1704. The book became known as Arabian Nights with the first anonymous English language translation in 1706.
