Octavo, bound in full red morocco by Zaehnsdorf for Asprey with gilt titles and raised bands to the spine, gilt turn-ins and elaborate inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Illustrated with engravings including tissue-guarded frontispiece. In fine condition. A superior example.

Born in Budapest in in 1816, Joseph Zaehnsdorf apprenticed to and obtained employment with several of Europe and London's most prestigious 19th century bookbinders. In 1842, he founded his own firm which became one of the most prestigious book binderies in the world and remained independent until 1983 when it merged with Sangorski and Sutcliffe.
