"She had always thought of love as something confused and furtive, and he made it as bright and open as the summer air": First Edition of Edith Wharton’s Summer; In the Rare Dust Jacket
First edition. Octavo, original red cloth. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with a closed tear to the front panel and some wear to the spine. Rare, especially in the original dust jacket.
Summer is one of only two novels to be set in New England by Wharton, who was best known for her portrayals of upper-class New York society. The novel details the sexual awakening of its protagonist, Charity Royall, and her cruel treatment by the father of her child, and shares many plot similarities with Wharton's better-known novel, Ethan Frome. Summer was an immediate sensation when first published in 1917 and still stands as one of Wharton's greatest achievements.
