At the center of the second book in McMurtry's Lonesome Dove series is Captain Woodrow F. Call, a bounty hunter hired to track down and kill the elusive and brilliant young Mexican bandit, Joey Garza. In the chase that ensues, an old man's skills are matched against a young man's daring. Call's wife Lorena is soon forced to journey into the barren midwinter landscape of Mexico to retrieve her husband and save their son. The novel was adapted into an American television miniseries starring James Garner as Call and Sissy Spacek as Lorena.
