Widely considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time, William T. Tilden II broke a number of records throughout his career including winning six consecutive U.S. National Championship Men’s Singles titles and 13 consecutive Davis Cup matches. In 1920, he became the first American to win two consecutive Wimbledon championships. Tilden held the position of the World No. 1 player for six years from 1920 through 1925 and won 15 Major singles titles including ten Grand Slam events, one World Hard Court Championship and four Pro Slam tournaments. His matches typically drew large crowds and he was admired for his good looks, charm, and athletic technique. Singles and Doubles is an epic in which Tennis itself is the hero and the champions of the early 20th century are the varying characters.
