American Catholic writer, theologian and Trappist monk Thomas Merton authored more than 70 books, mostly on spirituality, social justice and a quiet pacifism, as well as scores of essays and reviews. Merton was a proponent of interfaith understanding and pioneered dialogue between many prominent spiritual figures including the Dalai Lama and Thich Nhat Hanh. Fearing the Draft Board in 1941, Merton went to the Abbey of Gethsemani where he was accepted into the Order and studied the complicated Cistercian sign language and daily work and worship routine and kept detailed journals which would inform many of his works.
