BERNSTEIN, Leonard.

Item Number: 45001

Boston: The Boston Symphony Orchestra in Collaboration with David R. Godine, 1988.

First edition of this work on Leonard Bernstein. Octavo, original cloth, original slipcase, illustrated. Inscribed by Leonard Bernstein on the half-title page, “For Mrs. Maria Cole Best always LB.” The recipient, Maria Cole, was a jazz singer who performed with Count Basie and Duke Ellington in the 1940s and who was married to Nat King Cole for 17 years until his death in 1965. Bernstein and Cole were friends since the 1940s, seeing one another at Tanglewood each summer, where they both had homes and Bernstein conducted. A nice association. Fine in a fine slipcase. Edited by Steven Ledbetter. With other essays by John Rockwell, Andrew L. Pincus, Larry Stempel, Paul Hume, Steven Ledbetter, Michael Tilson Thomas and by Leonard Bernstein.

Leonard Bernstein's association with Tanglewood began in 1940 when he attended the Boston Symphony Orchestra's summer home as a conducting student. He conducted his final concerts at Tanglewood shortly before his death in 1990.
