Seize the Moment: America’s Challenge in a One-Superpower World.

NIXON, Richard.

Item Number: 119381

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1992.

First edition of Nixon’s critically praised assessment of American foreign policy. Octavo, original half cloth. Association copy, signed by Richard Nixon on the flyleaf and from the personal library of former four-term United States Senator Lloyd M. Bentsen, with the original typed transmittal letter signed by Nixon to him. On Nixon’s 577 Chestnut Ridge Road letterhead, the letter is dated January 2, 1991 and reads, “Dear Lloyd,” I thought you might be interested in seeing some unconventional wisdom on foreign and domestic issues. Best wishes for the New Year, Sincerely, “Dick”. The recipient, Lloyd Millard Bentsen, ran as the Democratic Party nominee for vice president in 1988 on the Michael Dukakis ticket and served as the the 69th United States Secretary of the Treasury under President Bill Clinton. As a primary architect of the Clinton economic plan, Bentsen contributed to a $500 billion reduction in the deficit, launching the longest period of economic growth since World War II. More than 5 million new jobs were created during his tenure as Secretary. Bentsen was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999. Fine in a fine dust jacket. A fine association.

In Seize the Moment President Nixon makes “short work of ‘three myths’ about the future of American foreign policy: the myths of the end of history, of the irrelevance of military power and of the decline of the United States. Rejecting both isolationism and a ‘global democratic crusade,’ Nixon comes down squarely on the side of what he calls ‘practical idealism… Building on his own formidable experience, Nixon analyzes, in successive chapters, the Soviet Union (‘the former evil empire’), Europe, the Pacific, the Middle East and the third world. It takes a former President—and not just any former President—to write a book as broad and as deep as this one” (New York Times)
