When the Civil War broke out, William spent two years as a war correspondent on the front, sending his dispatches back to the Cincinnati Commercial. He was first assigned to General William Rosecrans' army, where he was a volunteer aide-de-camp with the rank of captain. He also spent several months with General George McClellan's army, before being transferred back to Rosecrans. He was present at the Battle of Stones River, and Rosecrans' praise for his actions there earned him the rank of major. Howes B-422.
