First Edition of Mao's Little Red Book in the Iconic Red Vinyl Binding
First edition of Mao’s Quotations, universally known as the Little Red Book, in the iconic red vinyl binding. Small duodecimo, original card in red vinyl covers, the half-title and title printed in red with a green imprint and border, with a sepia-toned portrait of Chairman Mao and the uncorrected endorsement leaf of Lin Biao. This second issue in red vinyl was issued almost simultaneously with the first issue in paper wrappers and is the form in which the book is best known. Without the errata slip in the pocket at the end. With an ink stamp and ownership inscription at the foot of the half-title. In near fine condition. An exceptional example.
Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung, universally known as the Little Red Book, is among the most widely printed books in human history, produced in well over a billion copies. Compiled by the People’s Liberation Army and first issued in 1964, it gathers Mao’s pronouncements on revolution, class struggle, and correct thought into a pocket-sized handbook that became the central text of the Cultural Revolution, carried and brandished by millions of Red Guards across China. Its dissemination was promoted above all by Lin Biao, then Mao’s designated successor, whose endorsement urging the people to study Mao’s works is printed at the front; copies with his inscription intact predate his fall from favor in 1971, after which it was removed from later printings. Bound in its instantly recognizable red vinyl covers, the book remains one of the defining objects of twentieth-century political history.
