In recent years, physics and electrical engineering have seen striking developments and have moved closer together as the result of intensive study of quantum phenomena at radio and microwave frequencies. From the interaction of these two disciplines, a new field has emerged - quantum electronics, which the Electronics and Physics Branches of the Office of Naval Research requested Dr. Charles H. Townes to form a symposium to which leading physicists and electrical engineers were invited to present papers or to discuss the ramifications of this new development in their respective disciplines.
