Ulysses S. Grant’s copy of the Chicago National Union Republican Convention, to nominate the 1868 candidates for the offices of President and Vice President: Ulysses S. Grant and Schuyler Cofax. Octavo, bound in full red Presidential presentation binding, gilt titles and tooling to the spine and front panel, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. Laid in is the original transmittal letter addressed to Ulysses S. Grant on Office of the Congressional Printer letterhead. Addressed to U.S. Grant, Washington D.C., the letter reads, “Nov. 12th 1868 My dear sir: I thought it best to retain this copy of the proceedings of the Chicago Convention, intended for you, until your return for fear that it might be mislaid in your absence. Although of but little worth now, it will be highly valued by your posterity in of the times. Very Respectfully Sincerely Yours JNO. D. Defrees.” Additionally tipped in is the original envelope addressed to Grant in which the letter was sent. JNO D. Defrees served as Secretary of the National Republican Executive Committee. In very good condition with loss to the crown and foot of the spine. Housed in a custom half morocco and chemise slip case. Rare and desirable.

The 1868 Republican National Convention of the Republican Party of the United States was held in Crosby's Opera House in Chicago, Illinois from May 20th to May 21st, 1868. Commanding General of the U.S. Army Ulysses S. Grant was the unanimous choice of the Republicans for President; for Vice-President the delegates chose the Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives Schuyler Colfax, who was Grant's choice. Grant was elected into office on March 4th, 1869 and subsequently reelected in 1872.
