Based on the life of British archaeologist, officer, and author T.E. Lawrence, the 1962 British epic historical drama film Lawrence of Arabia was directed by David Lean and produced by Sam Spiegel, starring Peter O'Toole as T.E Lawrence and Alec Guinness as Prince Faisal. The film won seven Oscars at the 35th Academy Awards in 1963 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made. British stage and film actor Peter O'Toole achieved international recognition for his performance in the film for which he received his first nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. He was nominated for this award another seven times – for playing King Henry II in both Becket (1964) and The Lion in Winter (1968), Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1969), The Ruling Class (1972), The Stunt Man (1980), My Favorite Year (1982), and Venus (2006) – and holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations for acting without a win.
