Between 1799 and 1804, Prussian geographer, naturalist, and explorer Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt traveled extensively throughout the Americas, exploring and describing the region for the first time from a modern scientific point of view. Humboldt composed this personal narrative of his travels over the course of 21 years, which includes descriptions of his travels throughout the Canary Islands, Venezuela, Cuba, Mexico and the United States. Humboldt was notable one of the first scientists to propose that the the lands bordering the Atlantic Ocean were once joined.
