Rare first edition of this Armenian ecclesiastical history. Octavo, written in classical Armenian, bound in full contemporary calf with gilt titles to the spine in five compartments within elaborately gilt bands, green morocco spine label, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, engraved allegorical vignette to the title page. In good condition with rubbing, variable damp-staining and spotting throughout, a few scattered losses to the textblock. Printed at the celebrated Mekhitarist press of San Lazzaro in Venice.

Patmut'iwn Ekeghetsakan, or Ecclesiastical History, is a history of the Christian Church composed in Armenian by the archbishop Ignatius. It was printed in 1848 at the press of the Mekhitarist Congregation on the island of San Lazzaro degli Armeni in Venice, the monastery founded in 1717 by Mekhitar of Sebaste that became the great center of Armenian scholarship, printing, and cultural revival in the Catholic world. From its press at San Lazzaro the Mekhitarist fathers issued grammars, dictionaries, translations, and works of history and theology that preserved and renewed the classical Armenian language, and the monastery remains to this day one of the foremost repositories of Armenian manuscripts and learning. The text is set in the elegant Armenian type for which the Venice press was long renowned.
