English poet and polemicist John Milton was active during a time of religious flux and political upheaval and became best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost written in blank verse. In contrast to the expansive cosmic scope of the Fall in Paradise Lost, Paradise Regain’d offers a more concise, austere meditation on Christ’s temptation in the wilderness, framing spiritual victory through restraint, patience, and faith rather than martial conquest. Milton’s sparse style reflects the poem’s central theme: triumph through self-denial and obedience to divine will. The appended Samson Agonistes, modeled on Greek tragedy, continues this exploration of inner struggle and redemption by dramatizing Samson’s final act of faith amid physical ruin.
