DE NEBESKY-WOJKOWITZ, René.

Item Number: 88101

The Netherlands: Mouton & Co., Publishers, The Hauge, 1956.

First edition of Czech ethnologist and Tibetologist René de Nebesky-Wojkowitz’s best-known work, widely considered the foundational text in Tibetan popular religion and deity cults. Octavo, original cloth, gilt titles to the spine, illustrated. In near fine condition with some contemporary notes to the text and to the rear panel.

Czech Tibetologist René de Nebesky-Wojkowitz completed some of the most extensive research on Tibetan diety cults throughout the mid-20th century which he published in several articles, and especially in his most important work, Oracles and Demons of Tibet. Nebesky-Wojkowitz's sudden untimely death at the age of 36 (purportedly caused by pneumonia) shortly after the completion of the work led many members of the Tibetan Buddhist community to believe that his death was actually brought on by the wrath of the very protector deities he dedicated his life to studying.
