Joseph Orton Kerbey (1841-1913) served as a telegraph operator and a Union spy during the Civil War, writing about his war exploits in the post-war period. He worked as a press telegraph reporter in the U.S. Senate Press Gallery. Later, he entered the diplomatic service of the United States and was posted as a consul to Para, Brazil in 1891-1892.
