One of the great writers of world literature, François Rabelais is considered among the creators of modern European writing (Bahtin, 1984). His most renowned work is Gargantua and Pantagruel, and its satire and scatalogical humor of this time of censorship and increasing religious oppression have won Rabelais consideration as "....the greatest writer in the French language" (Le Clézio, 2008). The French novelist Honoré de Balzac was directly inspired by Rabelais to write his Les Cent Contes Drolatiques, and he quotes Rabelais lavishly in his La Comédie humaine (Brix, 2005).
