Item Number: 50069

New York: Crown Publishers, 1984.

First edition. Oblong quarto, original cloth, illustrated. Translated by Ralph Manheim. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page with a large drawing of the Nutcracker, “For Herb, who is the original Drosselmeier, and who inspired me–always! happy Nutcracker!” The recipient was Herb Hosmer, a close personal friend of Sendak’s. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of wear.

The tale of Nutcracker, written by E.T.A. Hoffmann in 1816, has fascinated and inspired artists, composers, and audiences for over two hundred years. This beautiful book preserves the compelling vision of Hoffman’s classic Christmas tale that acclaimed illustrator Maurice Sendak created for the Pacific Northwest Ballet. "A classic, new and complete. One of the ten best illustrated children's books of the year" (New York Times Book Review).
