Item Number: 101496

Paris: Goupil & Co, 1910.

Finely bound example of de Nolhac’s work on the paintings of Jean-Marc Nattier. Octavo, bound in three quarters morocco over marbled boards, gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Illustrated with tipped-in engravings including frontispiece in color. In very good condition.

Nattier's graceful and charming portraits of court ladies in this mode were very fashionable, partly because he could beautify a sitter while also retaining her likeness. Many of his pictures are in the public collections of France. "He distinguished himself as a portrait painter, in which capacity he was much employed" (Bryan, 7). The author, a noted French art historian noted for his substantial body of work on Renaissance humanism.
