First Edition of Mr. President; Warmly Inscribed by President Harry S. Truman
First edition of this landmark publication drawn from the personal diaries, private letters, papers, and revealing interviews of President Harry S. Truman. Quarto, original cloth, illustrated with color and black-and-white photographs. Presentation copy, lengthily signed and inscribed by Harry S. Truman beneath the color frontispiece portrait, "Best wishes to Richard J. Feeney, may he have a long and happy life. Harry Truman. Dec. 6, 1958." Very good in a very good dust jacket. Assembled by journalist William Hillman. Pictures by Alfred Wagg. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from James Spence Authentication (JSA). A very sharp example.
Mr. President was the first publication drawn from the personal diaries, private letters, papers, and candid interviews of Harry S. Truman, published in 1952 while Truman was still in office. Offering an unprecedented look into the mind of a sitting president, it reproduces Truman's own handwritten memoranda and reflections. Harry S. Truman (1884 to 1972), the thirty-third President of the United States, assumed office on the death of Franklin Roosevelt in April 1945 and led the nation through the end of the Second World War, the decision to use the atomic bomb, the founding of the United Nations and NATO, the Marshall Plan, and the Korean War. Plainspoken and famously decisive, he left office in 1953 as one of the most consequential presidents of the twentieth century.
