Mountain Sheep: A Study in Behavior and Evolution.

MATTHIESSEN PETER) GEIST, Valerius; Edited by George B. Schaller.

Item Number: 5617

Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1971.

First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by editor George Schaller to Peter Matthiessen on the front free endpaper, “To Peter, the sheep waddies of sheep from George March, 1975.” With Matthiessen’s printed name above in his hand and bookplate to the inner gutter. Very good in a very good dust jacket. This book was used in research for the author’s masterwork, The Snow Leopard and is cited in its bibliography. A nice association, linking Schaller, one of the foremost field biologists of the twentieth century and Matthiessen, one of the finest nature writers of the last half century.

Mountain Sheep is a scientific study of a unique firsthand field study of free-living mountain sheep. The close observation of these animals was done at all seasons by Valerie Geist, who often traveled with hands of sheep, spending many hours observing them in their native haunts.
