Men Like Gods.

First edition of H. G. Wells' Men Like Gods; Inscribed by Him to His Mother-In-Law

Men Like Gods.

WELLS, H.G.

Item Number: 95219

London: Cassell and Company, 1923.

First edition of Wells’ utopian scientific fantasy. Octavo, original blind-stamped green cloth, gilt titles to the spine. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, “H.G. to his Mother in law.” The recipient M.C. Robbins, was the mother of Wells’s second wife Jane. Near fine in the original dust jacket which shows a few small chips and wear to the extremities. An excellent association.

H. G. Wells was a prominent member of the Fabian society and a utopian socialist; the great majority of his novels explore potential utopias and dystopias of the future, and how they may come to pass. Contemporary reviews of the present volume were largely positive, Wells himself said of it: "It did not horrify or frighten, was not much of a success, and by that time, I had tired of talking in playful parables to a world engaged in destroying itself."
