New York: George H. Doran Company, 1927.

First American edition of Wells’ 1927 novel detailing a house-party Casa Terragena, an Italian villa with a famous garden on the Italian Riviera. Octavo, original cloth. Very good in the original dust jacket which is in good condition with some wear to the extremities.

Wells' Meanwhile was one of his first works to expound upon his Open Conspiracy theory which proposed that, largely as the result of scientific progress, a common vision of a world "politically, socially and economically unified" was emerging among educated and influential people, which would become "a world revolution aiming at universal peace, welfare and happy activity" (Wells, The Open Conspiracy: Blue Prints for a World Revolution). The novel was regarded variously by critics upon publication, but later praised by David C. Smith for its "excellent descriptions of the rich on the Riviera just before the deluge, as well as a poignant and sharp analysis of the fascist system under stress."
