The grandson of former Vice-President Adlai E. Stevenson, Adlai E. Stevenson II came from a distinguished family in Illinois and was well known as a gifted orator, intellectual, and political moderate. Early in 1952, while Stevenson was still governor of Illinois, President Harry S. Truman decided that he would not seek another term as president. Instead, Truman met with Stevenson in Washington and proposed that Stevenson seek the Democratic nomination for president; Truman promised him his support if he did so. Although Stevenson was initially hesitant, he eventually accepted the Democratic nomination and was ultimately defeated by his Republican opponent Dwight D. Eisenhower.
