The Prince became popular in England in the late 16th century in Italian as well as French and Latin translations. The first English translation to appear in print was Edward Dacres’s 1640 edition. Although it is relatively short, Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince is the most remembered of his works and the one most responsible for bringing the word “Machiavellian” into usage as a pejorative. It is generally agreed that it was especially innovative for its time and is often considered to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal.
