American librettist, theatrical producer, and theatre director Oscar Hammerstein II is best known for his collaborations with Richard Rodgers, as the duo Rodgers and Hammerstein, whose collaborations include Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Hammerstein's Lyrics is a collection of his own favorite lyrics over the past quarter of a century with a special section, which was Mr. Hammerstein's own idea, on writing the words for music.
