Life on the Mississippi [Fore-Edge Painting].

TWAIN, Mark [Samuel L. Clemens].

Item Number: 118679

London: Chatto & Windus, Piccadilly, 1883.

First British edition of Twain’s classic work on life on the Mississippi River, which preceded the first American edition. Octavo, bound in full morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine, gilt ruling to the panels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt with a fore-edge painting of Twain and the steamboat Baton Rouge, with over 300 illustrations including tissue-guarded frontispiece, with the original cloth cover adhered to the front pastedown. In near fine condition. Rare and desirable.

An invaluable companion to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Life on the Mississippi is Mark Twain's inimitable portrait of 'the great Father of Waters'. Part memoir, part travelogue, it expresses the full range of Twain's literary personality, and remains the most vivid, boisterous and provocative account of the cultural and societal history of the Mississippi Valley, from 'the golden age' of steamboating to the violence wrought by the Civil War.
