Born in Buchanan, Virginia, American novelist Mary Johnston became one of the best-selling authors in America during her extensive writing career in the early 20th century. Originally published in The Atlantic Monthly in 1899, her second novel, To Have and to Hold became the bestselling novel in the United States in 1900. Johnston as close friends with fellow writer Margaret Mitchell who once said of her: "I hesitate to write about the South after having read Mary Johnston."
