"This is the whole of the story and we might have left it at that had there not been profit and pleasure in the telling": Vladimir Nabokov's Laughter in the Dark

NABOKOV, Vladimir.

Item Number: 89064

New York: New Directions, 1960.

First edition of the New Directions edition of this early Nabokov novel. Octavo, original cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with some wear to the front panel. Jacket design by Griselda Ohannessian and Charles Kaplan.

The first English-language edition of Laughter in the Dark appeared in England under the title Camera Obscura in 1936 but Nabokov so disliked the translation that he decided to produce his own translation for the American edition. It was adapted to the 1969 film directed by Tony Richardson, which was originally intended to star Richard Burton as Albinus. When he was fired for drunkenness, he was replaced by Nicol Williamson. Anna Karina played Margot and Jean-Claude Drouot Axel Rex.
