La Aventura de Miguel Littin Clandestino en Chile.

GARCIA MARQUEZ, Gabriel.

Item Number: 118798

Mexico: Editorial Diana, 1986.

First edition of Garcia Marquez’s revealing account of the clandestine visit of the Chilean film director Miguel Littín in 1985 to his native country after 12 years in exile. Octavo, original boards.  Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Rare and desirable as nearly 15,000 copies of the first edition were burned by the Ministry of the Interior on the orders of Augusto Pinochet.

After ten years in power, Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet issued a list with the names of exiles who would be permitted to return to Chile. Chilean film director Miguel Littín was not on the list, but decided to return to Chile, regardless, using a false passport, profession and wife. Marquez documented Littin's story in an attempt to expose the brutal repression of Pinochet's dictatorship and embarrass his regime by revealing the networks of young people working in Chile to overthrow the dictatorship. A year after publication, the Ministry of the Interior acknowledged having burned 15,000 copies of the first edition on the orders of Augusto Pinochet.
