Item Number: 88170

1947.

Royal Christmas card from 1947 bearing a family photo King George VI, Queen consort Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and their daughters Princess Margaret and Elizabeth II posed by the grand piano in Buckingham Palace. Boldly signed below the image by, “George R. I. 1947” and “Elizabeth R.” Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 11 inches by 19 inches.

Elizabeth II has been Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand since 6 February 1952. She ascended the throne at the age of 25, upon the death of her father, King George VI, on 6 February 1952, and was proclaimed queen by her various privy and executive councils shortly afterwards. The coronation took place more than a year later on June 2, 1953 because of the tradition that holding such a festival is inappropriate during the period of mourning that follows the death of a monarch.
