Autograph letter signed by and entirely in the hand of Jefferson Davis as the United States Senator of Mississippi. One page, the letter reads, “Mr. Muhan Dear Sir, Please give ship A. Irwin a book for me, the title of which she will give to you. Respectfully yours Jefferson Davis. Senate Chamber 23, May 1860.” In fine condition. Double matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Davis. The entire piece measures 18 inches by 13 inches.

Jefferson Finis Davis served as the only President of the Confederate States of America from 1861 to 1865. As a member of the Democratic Party, he represented Mississippi in the United States Senate and the House of Representatives prior to switching allegiance to the Confederacy. Davis was captured in 1865, accused of treason, and imprisoned. He was released after two years and completed his well-known work The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government in 1881.
